Remote Education Provision

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

For the first two days, pupils work will be set via our class dojo platform or via parentmail/Bromcom. This will be planned activities and set lessons which pupils would receive if they were at school.

Where appropriate we will then contact families directly to provide pupils with their log in details for the outlook 365 service in preparation for their live lessons which will be hosted on Microsoft Teams.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

  • We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we may need to make some adaptations in some subjects.

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

Key Stage 1 and 2 – Pupils will receive a planned lesson from each subject area on their timetable for that day that remote education is taking place.

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

All parents are signed up the Class dojo and all activities and learning documents will be distributed on this platform. All live lessons, where appropriate will take place via Microsoft Teams, all of the items can be accessed via a laptop/tablet or mobile device. If parents are having difficulty accessing any of these platforms work can be sent directly via email.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

If pupils do not have access to an electronic device we will ensure that all work documents are sent via the post and pupils can complete paper-based activities and lessons with detailed information. Pupils will receive support via the telephone if required to support parents understanding with the lesson expectations and outcomes.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

Pupils will be taught in a variety of ways which are appropriate to their own individual needs:

  • live teaching (online lessons- via Microsoft teams)
  • recorded teaching (e.g. video/audio recordings made by teachers)
  • printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)
  • commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences
  • long-term project work and/or internet research activities (as per the schools full opening guidance, schools are expected to avoid an over-reliance on these approaches)

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

  • We expect all pupils to access all areas of their learning and participate in the lessons/activities as they would if they were in school. Pupils use the hands up button on Teams to ask questions and microphones will be switched off during the live lessons and online switched on when a question is to be asked. Pupils will follow all of the class rules which are expected at Leycroft Academy.
  • We kindly ask parents to support the education of their child and encourage pupils to complete all of the lessons and activities set. Parents are asked not to contribute to class discussions and simply ensure that their child is participating within the lesson. Parents are able to contact the class teacher via dojo if they have any concerns.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Pupils are able to send work to their teacher via dojo messages. Staff will check this work and provide a comment similar to our marking and presentation policy explaining what went well and even better if.

If engagement is a concern the class teacher will contact you to enquire if there are any difficulties surrounding remote education and how we can help. All concerns will be placed onto our CPOM’s platform for the designated safeguarding leads to monitor and action where necessary.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

  • What went well and even better if comments when work is received
  • Dojo points within the lesson
  • Feedback within the lesson
  • Quiz activities
  • Set activities which are monitored

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

Pupils will be provided with work on Class Dojo to complete at home.
